The award of the German Academy of Forensic Odontostomatology (AKFOS) as an appreciation and acknowledgement for identifying the victims of the large disaster on September 11, 2001 is given in 2004 to the New York City Medical Examiner´s Dental Identification Team and its Chief Forensic Dentist Jeffrey Burkes, DDS, with respect to the success of forensic odontology advancing Forensic Dentistry in the United States:
